ISLAMABAD: National Security Council (NSC) Secretary General Tariq Aziz met opposition leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Tuesday to discuss the appointment of a retired general as chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
“I was surprised to know that the government wanted to consult the opposition for appointing a retired general as NAB chairman, although they know that we are against the existence of the institution. I do not know why they need our consultation,” said Mr Rehman. The meeting lasted more than an hour.
Maulana said that the meeting had a one-point agenda only and nothing else was discussed.
He said that he had categorically told Mr Aziz that how could he give advice on the appointment of the chairman of an institution that he did not recognise. “The institution should secure people’s confidence,” he said.
However, he said the opposition was not against accountability, but the role of NAB as a bludgeon to change politicians’ loyalties. “We are against the institution because it has failed to play its constitutional role and is used for blackmailing,” he said.
NNI adds: The Musharraf regime is considering for the post of NAB chairman five retired generals – Lt Gen (r) Shahid Aziz, Lt Gen (r) Hamid Javed, Lt Gen (r) Syed Arif Hasan, Lt Gen (r) S P Shahid and Lt Gen (r) Zarrar Azeem
